A music school in a refugee camp!
“Music has always been in my blood”

I started a music studio and school, to give an opportunity to youth in Kakuma who tend to sell and use drugs because of lack of opportunities in the refugee camp. Some of them have top positions in the music industry now. And thanks to the new business incubator in the camp, I now work on my own live band. I am Desire Niyingabiye From Burundi. In music they call me D'Africano, which means love for Africa. I am 27, married, with three kids. I lost my father many years ago when I was still young. So, I was left under the care of a single mother. I fled from my country in 2014 because of insecurity. I can’t say more. I arrived in Kakuma in the same year and stepped into music quickly. Since my childhood, music has always been in my blood. I always dreamed of becoming a great musician. I was especially inspired by the late Michael Jackson. I really love his music style and always listen to his songs and videos. In Burundi I often went to studios to learn and know how to produce songs. I gradually started singing gospel in 2010 because I was in a choir. And I learned how to play the guitar and keyboards. I love God and I never forget to praise Him. I produced one album with sixteen gospel songs. Later, I began to sing Hip hop, R&B and Afro beats. In Kakuma, it really hurt me to see that talented youth is idle because of lack of opportunities to nurture their talents. I observed that most of the youth were involved in drugs because they had nothing else to do. I realized that they use drugs to relief them from stress. Some wanted to be musicians but there was no way for them to make it. I felt like I could be of help to them. And I turned my house into a studio and named it House of Music. By then, I did not have enough funds. I had only one laptop and music recorder. I produced four songs and together with the songs I brought from Burundi I performed at many occasions in Kakuma and I was able to make some money. In addition, many youths were coming to produce their songs and this generated more funds for my business. Nevertheless, I realized that recording the songs alone for the youth will not be of much help to them. Therefore, I established a music school that focuses on video production, audio recording and how to play guitar and keyboards. I also train them on how to write and compose songs. So far, I have produced songs with over 100 youth from all nationalities in Kakuma. Some of them are now famous musicians. They are competent in music industry and occupy top positions in competitions. Moreover, I used to bring back my students and employ them to teach the others. Currently, some of my students are professional song producers. These skills and knowledge have helped them getting self-employed to get income for themselves. I am also grateful for the business incubators for their positive contribution to my business. I benefitted so much from them. First of all, they provided me with loans which I have used to get the resources or materials for my business. And most importantly they have trained me on how to manage my business and assigned me a coach who works closely with me and to check and guide me on my progress. The business incubators have given me the idea of a live band. We get quite good money from a live band. It is very nice and we love doing it. Lastly, my dream is to build a big and an inclusive music school that will allow all the youth in Kakuma to benefit. It is also my dream to form a music association that will create a forum where the youth share ideas and benefit from each other.
