Customers for  Cakes !
The only things I enjoy in Kakuma is seeing my kids growing up healthy and getting many customers for my cakes.  I am Hurwein Haji Fartun from Somalia, 27 years old and single mother of two kids. I came to Kakuma in 2008. I could no longer stay in my country Somalia because of insecurity and civil war. Since I came to this place, I started doing bakery.  I make cakes and sell them. This is the only way for me and my children to survive in the camp. I don’t have any financial support but from my business. I like this job because it allows me to interact and be in touch with many people since I am living alone with my kids. I still remember when my friend went to Canada for resettlement. I saw her and her family struggling. And she told me “you are the next person the go to Canada, I will be waiting for you.” Funny thing, ever since she told me in 2010, I am waiting to get out of Kakuma. I prefer to leave this place because it is not good for me and my children. I would like to tell people that Kakuma is not a place like anyplace: people struggle and life is not easy in this camp, especially for children. I would like to become successful in my business and I just want support from my community to reach there. I would like one day to have a bakery company.
