Hairdresser with a history:
Salon helps father of seven to
survive in the refugee camp
My father was killed by his jealous brothers who later tried to kill me. In  Kakuma I attended a hairdressing course. Now my salon helps me and my wife and seven children to survive in the refugee camp.
My name is Leon Mlodani Abedi from Congo. I'm 34 years old, married and father of seven children. I fled from Congo in 2011 to Kakuma due to insecurity. My father was a rich man. However, his own brothers became jealous of him. They wanted to grab his wealth, but the only way for them was to kill him. It was an evil plan and they definitely killed him when I was six. I didn't know much about that, but later my mother told me the whole story about the cause of his death. My mother got sick and eventually died. It was traumatizing incident but I had to continue with my life. And I got married. However, I decided to claim the wealth of my father. But this became a death threat to me and my family. The same uncles wanted to kill me and my two children. So, my wife and I decided to escape from the country. And I started my journey to Kakuma. I arrived in Kakuma that same year (2011). While in Kakuma, I faced a lot of challenges with my family. For instance, the climate was hot and dry, poor feeding, and lack of job opportunity. Life was difficult for me, but still I was happy because I found peace of mind. Besides, I met with people from different nationalities and I learned from them. I also realized that some people have more challenges than me. This was a motivation for me to move on. Though I was jobless and merely depended on the food distributed by the UNHCR, I still saw the possibility of making a difference. I wanted to start a salon business because they were rare to be found in the refugee camp. Women moved over long distances to get hairdressers. But the only challenge was that, I didn't have skills and resources to establish the business. However, in 2018 Swiss Contact opened training centers for various courses, I was happy to see a hairdressing course among the courses. I joined the course for four months. After completion, 27 of us were provided with the equipments like generators, cupboards, blow-dry and driers. But the greatest challenge was that, Swiss Contact did not provide us with money. So we had to work really hard to get money for renting the room and for expansion of the business at the end of the month. After working for the first one month, 25 of us gave up on the business. We were left the two of us and our work force could not afford to pay for the room. So we decided to disperse and look for other small rooms. My colleague went his own way. I moved to another place where I started my personal salon in 2019. I named it Seleo Salon. In my salon, the services offer include pedicure, manicure, makeup, weaving, braiding, fashion cleansing, settings, twisting, and dreadlock, deep condition and others. This business has changed my life abundantly. Before, life was hard. My children did not get good clothes, soap and other basic needs. But now, I'm able to provide everything for my family.
