Rejected and kicked out by his parents
I was rejected and kicked out by my parents. Civil war was the ideal way for them to leave me. This is how I ended up in a refugee camp, convoyed by my aunty family.
My name is Okello Joseph. I arrived in Kakuma refugee camp in October 2000, all the way from South Sudan. Writing, photography, filming and playing football are my passions and my daily activities. They refresh my mind and keep me busy while helping me build skills and knowledge. Best about Kakuma are the different people that I meet every day from diverse backgrounds. These people help me restore my hope and give me reason to continue living. However, ethical differences between people and not giving equal opportunity to all is what I dislike. My dearest memory is the documentary about Kakuma I helped to produce with World Economic Forum. I want to became a documentary producer. And I am keeping on searching for scholarships. I would like to leave this place and go somewhere else like Canada, because I want a place that I will call home. A place where I will live peacefully. My family doesn’t know me just because my dad disowned me. The only hope I did have was my late mom who passed away when I was only three months old. My dream is to see Africa without borders. I mean free movement within Africa. And my dream for Kakuma is to see hope restored and see people living their dreams.
