The smartest schoolboy of  Kakuma
wants to become neurosurgeon,
but first a scholarship in Nairobi!
I had the highest grades in the whole of Kakuma refugee camp when I finished primary school this year! I  live with 65 other lost boys in one compound, which is great fun! But now I want to study in Nairobi and eventually become a neurosurgeon like Ben Carson who successfully separated twins in West Africa who were born with their heads joined together.  My name is Madhieu Akol Bol, 17 years old South Sudanese boy who came to Kakuma Refugee Camp in 2014 as a result of war. I vividly remember how the fight erupted. We all ran into different directions till I found myself running with my cousin. We were lucky to be collected by a good Samaritan .The stranger promised to take us to where we would never hear any gunshots again. And after days of walking we arrived in Kakuma refugee camp. The stranger told us to look for people to live with. And we found other un-accompanied minors who had escaped the conflict from nearly the same village we lived in, and we joined them. We are now 65 boys staying together in one household. I really like the fun we have and the unity of doing everything together. But there is a lack of basic needs, such as clothing and foods. We therefore do eat only once a day, mostly dinner. And sometimes we skip a day in order to make the little we have last longer. The memories of my family keep me awake at night. When I think about the wonderful times back there with my father, mother and siblings, I just can not sleep. I don't have any contact with them up-to now because I don't know their whereabouts. I pray they may be safe wherever they are and hope to be reunited with them again when peace comes to South Sudan. I do keep myself going by attending classes in school and by playing football. But since a few years I can’t see that good any more. I can not clearly see what the teacher writes on the blackboard for instance. And I can not read for long during nighttime. But I am so glad and proud to have successfully completed my primary education level this year with excellent marks, 400 out of 500! I was overjoyed when the results were announced and found out that I was the top pupil in Kakuma camp! I have a big dream to accomplish. I want to become a doctor and go back home to bring changes in South Sudan. To save lives. I want to find treatments to some of the deadly diseases that kills people in Africa, such as HIV/AIDS. My icon is neurosurgeon Ben Carson in the US who is known to have saved many lives and successfully managed to separate twins in West Africa who were born with their heads joined together. With the marks I scored, I can now get a scholarship if am lucky. I keep my eyes on the notice board for any scholarship advertisements. I want to study at Alliance Boys High School in Nairobi. I want to set a record in the academic world and prove to the world that refugees are just people like them. I believe in ‘no human is limited’, the quote from Kenyan marathoner Eliud Kipchoge who has set a world record this year in Vienna by running 42km under two hours!
