One leg singer in Kakuma Got Talent
I lost my leg because of a rebel attack in my home village in Congo. Now it is my third season in Who’s Got Talent in the refugee camp. I want to prove myself that I can make it even with my disability! My name is Emile Alembe, 17 years old from Congo. My artist name is Emless. I'm in grade seven in Gambella primary school. I have two siblings. I'm the the first born. I currently live in Kakuma Refugee Camp. I came to the Kakuma refugee camp in 2011 because of insecurity problems in my country of origin. My parents brought me to Kakuma with my younger sibling. The availability of security, free basic education and support from UN and other organizations in kakuma gives us some hopes. However, this place is hot and dusty. The climatic conditions are not good at all. The weather does not favour agriculture. Getting a job here is difficult for my father. My mother is engaged in a small business of selling dry fish that she buys from Kakuma Town. She uses her small earnings to buy shoes and clothes for me and my siblings and to supplement the food we get from the UN. Back in Congo, when I was about 5 years old, our village was attacked by rebels. They came at night and they were mercilessly shooting at innocent people in the village. Everybody was scattered into different directions. In the process of escaping, I was shot in my leg. Three days later I was found unconscious by some students and taken to a hospital. Luckily I recovered but I lost one of my legs. It was the most painful moment in my life. Since my childhood, I have always wanted to be a musician. Today, I still love singing. Despite the physical state that I am in, I am still motivated to become a great musician like Diamond Platinumz. I actively started engaging in R&B music in the year 2015. I teamed up with two other friends, Rocky (Ronkei) and Ogi John. We named our band 'Three Brothers' because we were like brothers. We shared similar dreams and we did our practices together. Due to misunderstandings in the band, Ogi left. Now the band is down to two members hence the name Two Brothers. Sometimes I look for a quiet place alone to compose my songs and sing. A friend of mine named Ali who is now abroad, taught me how to compose songs. I have participated in the Kakuma Got Talent program for three consecutive times. I passed the audition stage two times but got knocked out in the middle. I have many reasons as to why I want to be a great musician. First, I want to prove myself that I can make it even with my disability. My parents and friends always encourage me to continue pursuing my talent. The least I can do is to make them proud. And most importantly, through music I want to inspire other young people around me and especially those living with disabilities not to give up on dreams but to identify their talents and nurture them. My songs mostly convey messages of encouragement and hope. I am motivated to help others in the future like I have always been supported by others. In order to grow my talent and be useful, I wish to move to a place like Canada. Life with a handicap in a camp is really difficult. I want a place where I can study and learn music.
