Orphan with a talent for music
I am an orphan in a refugee camp with a passion for Bongo music. I have already produced one album and I dream of becoming one of the greatest musicians in the world. My artist name is Dimpoz (from dimples). My real name is Lalakia Buyoya. I am 19 years. I have finished primary school and will be going to secondary next year. I'm from Burundi but born in a refugee camp in Tanzania. My parents fled Burundi in 1997, escaping civil war. But they had misunderstandings and got divorced. I was only two when my mother left me with my father. I missed my mother's care and love. My father was always busy. It was my elder brother, only six years by then, who started to take care of me. Life was hard. There was no school. There was little food. Luckily the camp was closed in 2011 and we moved to Kakuma in Kenya. My father married again. But our stepmother did not like us. Sometimes we slept without food. My father passed away in 2015 and our stepmother married another man. We were left alone, thinking the whole world was against us. We prayed every day, because the only hope we had was God. Finally, my elder brother got some work through a friend. We used the little income he gained to support ourselves. It was in this period that I started listening endlessly to one of my favorite musicians, Ommy Dimpoz from Tanzania. A great artist, a Bongo beat singer. I felt inspired and said to myself: I can do this too! That’s how I started my music career, in 2014. I got my best friend involved: Abi from Burundi, faced with many challenges in his family who had also fled Burundi. Abi wants music to change his life and the life of his family. I have already produced an album with four Bongo beat songs. And I have written many more songs in my diary books. But I have not managed to produce them because of lack of money. I hope to make another great album soon with the support of my fans. Thanks to my music I have been able to change my life and that of my brothers. Some friends now give me money because they are impressed with my songs. Music brings people together. It entertains and gives meaning to people. I'm thankful to Kakuma because it has given me the chance to work on my talent. I want to be one of the greatest musicians in the world. I know the hardship and the bad life I have gone through. But that does not define me. What defines me is the progress I make and the steps I take towards realizing my dream and destiny. I will never ever give up.
