Lonely school drop out from Burundi starts farming in refugee camp - to survive
I am living all alone in Kakuma. My mother, my only relative, lives in Burundi. I have dropped out of school in form two because life was difficult. I am now farming instead, to make a living. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer in Belgium! My name is Nizigama Floribert, 25 years old from Bujumbura, Burundi. I am the only child of my parents. I arrived here alone, in Kakuma refugee camp, on January 11, 2018 because of insecurity in my country. The only family member that I have is my mother and she is in Burundi now. Currently, I am living alone. I dropped out of school in form two because life was difficult. Initially, I depended on the food ration that is distributed by the UN, but it was not enough. In addition, finding other basic needs like clothes was difficult for me. With no other external support to help me satisfy these needs, I had to look for an alternative by myself.
Four months ago, I started vegetables farming near a seasonal river between Kakuma-One and Two. In this small portion of farm, I grow spinach, okra, and other local vegetables. I have to admit that growing crops in these harsh climatic conditions of Kakuma is not an easy task. It takes some courage and efforts to make a living out of it. With some colleagues we have drugged a well near the farm for watering the crops. We use a small machine to pump the water out of the well using pipes that direct it into the crops. I face a few challenges in my work. Pests attack my crops. The land is dry and it can take long before it rains and when it does, sometimes floods destroy the crops. And my crops may be stolen, since my farm is far from my home. So I spend most of the nights at my farm, to protect my crops. However, I am able to support myself with my farm and supply some of my products to Bujumbura Market in Kakuma-Three.
Apart from farming, I run a small salon in Kakuma-Three where I spend the afternoons sometime. I plan to resume my educational journey once I am stable. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer in the future. I am interested in physics. In my opinion, Kakuma is not a good place for refugees to stay for long. It is my wish to see refugees employed and live better lives. Personally, I want to settle in Belgium so that I can achieve my dream there. Moreover, I want the local Turkana people who have interacted with the refugees for decades to get education so that they can transform their community.
