My dream is mentoring women to go to school and realise their dreams and rights
I am a refugee from Sudan, I am a mother of six and I am attending primary school. My dream is mentoring women in Kakuma to go to school and realise their dreams and rights. I am Mariam Ismail Kuwa, 33 years old and Sudanese by nationality. My husband has died some years back so I am a single parent. I arrived in Kakuma on 17th August, 2011. I fled from Sudan because of political instability and insecurity. I moved to Kakuma to have peace of mind and for my children to access education and avoid being traumatised. I like many things in Kakuma more especially there is security where you live without fear of being attacked. People live in peace here in Kakuma. There is free education. My children and I are learning, which is very great. And food is free. However, I dislike mostly the climate of Kakuma. It is very hot and dry. This makes Kakuma to be the worst place to live in. I will live to remember education in Kakuma because back in my country there was no good education system and all my children were staying at home without school. I am in class five now and I hope to finish primary school in the next 3 years. My daily activities in Kakuma are reading books, taking care of my children and also cooking. These activities are important to me because like reading enables me to improve my English language and to make sure my children are safe, have something to eat and to live a happy and healthy life. What I like most about them is that, they give me meaning to keep hope and determine to achieve more and more in life. In addition, there is no work I am doing because I am also learning like my children and being in class five requires me to do a lot and stay focused, but since I am a single parent sometimes life is very difficult for me like the children need other things like pens, books, clothes, and good diet. So for me to cope with this situation is not easy. It requires me to be more courageous and balance my efforts both in school works and home duties, I act as a father and a mother and what I do to get these items for my children although I don't provide all of them. I used to bake bread from the wheat flour received from the UNHCR and sell it to get some little cash which I equally distributed to my children, but it is not always because sometime the food is little to scoop some of it and sell. However, I want to become a women right activist in the future because in some countries like my own country Sudan, women are not given their rights for example, I was willing to join the school in my early age but my parents did not support me to access education rather they preferred me to be married. I will ensure to become what I want to become in the future by working hard in school and do women right in the near future, and also knowing in mind that there is no age limit in education. I prefer to go back to my country Sudan in the future and live there, I want to be the change in my country because that is the place I belong, my family members are still there now facing political, social, and economic crisis. Besides, I am going to realise this by making sure I finish my studies, achieve education, and use it as a tool for change in my country. My dream for myself is to work hard and change my lifestyle from the current situation to much better life, and to see my family, my community, and my nation prosper. Moreover, my dream for Kakuma is to work towards helping people in Kakuma when I'm a better person in the future through mentoring women to go to school and realise their dreams and rights. Lastly, I would like to tell the people who have never visited Kakuma that, it is the place where people relight hope, and where bad memories and experiences like trauma, mental illness are healed. Furthermore, the people of the world should learn that refugees are real people with potential and capable to do what any other person in the world can do. And yes, I'm proud to be an inhabitant of Kakuma.
