Once forced to marry,
now a successful singer  for women and girls ...
I had my first song hit Kakuma and beyond in 2017. I want to use music to fight for women’s and girl’s rights. My name is Akuot Mareng Mercy. I am 26 years old, married and mother of two young kids. I am South Sudanese, from the Dinka tribe. I arrived in Kakuma Refugee Camp in 2015, after I had lived for 5 years as a refugee in Uganda. I fled South Sudan because of insecurity and because my parent forcefully married me off at the early age of 15. I like Kakuma because of the peaceful coexistence and opportunities to do anything I want. My best memory of Kakuma is my Kakuma TED X presentation about my life, in 2017. I was glad to share my story and I inspired many people in Kakuma and other parts of the world.

I work as a community facilitator at the Danish Refugee Council. I love my job because it's how I get to serve my community and inspire girls to pursue their dreams. I want to become an ambassador of change by strengthening women and girls and protecting them against sexual gender based violence. I am also musician. I had my first song 'Annavyonifanya' hit across Kakuma and beyond in 2017, released with the support of FilmAid International and Kenyan 's R&B Singer Wyre. I want the rest of the world to know the stories of resilience, strength, courage and hope from refugees living in Kakuma.
Kakuma is a place where diversity is embraced.

I am proud of Kakuma and I love my job as a community facilitator, musician and a women rights activist.
