Son of go-getter who escaped Ethiopia, dreams of playing basketball in the NBA in the US
My mother did everything to keep me alive when escaping Ethiopia and settling in Kakuma. Now I owe it to her to make something out of my life. Basketball is more than my talent. It is my duty. If I don’t play, I won't make it in life. I am ready for the NBA competition. So, if you need another Steph Curry for your team, you’ll find me here in Kakuma! I am Bhan Biel. I do play basketball like I do write compositions at school. I am 16 years of age and 16 years under asylum in Kakuma refugee camp. I was born in Kakuma mission hospital, one of the best facilities the location has. I live with my mother who fled war and famine in my native country, to look for new beginnings here in the Kakuma refugee camp. I am Ethiopian by descent. That's my mother's home. Although my mother is here, I don't stay with her. I do live with my brothers in the ghetto to keep up with school and also play basketball. Before I was even born, famine broke out in my mother’s homeland. My mother decided to move southwards to Kenya, to save both hers and her unborn child's lives. The unborn child happened to be me. Luckily, she did manage to travel South through the Ilemi Triangle on foot. A walk she will never forget. She started the journey when they were in great numbers but at the end only 50 made it through the wilderness and my then pregnant mom was one of them. Luckily, she got to Kakuma and now Kakuma is my home. She settled in Kakuma-One. At first it wasn't easy for her as water and food were inadequate. She had to walk kilometers to fetch water in a dusty environment. Sometimes there was no food for days. She used to tell me this over and over again, to strengthen me. And I did cry every time she recalled this. And I pay her appreciation for all she did for me to keep me alive. That load she had is now mine. That's why I make basketball my workforce to make a living. So, to me it is more than a talent. It is a duty. If I don’t play, I won't make it in life. I know it is hard but every time I think about mama, I do a lot of drama on the court to get my chance. I train and do massive practice. My team mates used to despise me because of my small body. But I never backed down. I always knew that what mattered was my goal in life, not their useless shatters and roumors. I kept it a 100 percent to myself. There were days I could moan in pain when hit by a bigger opponent. It was not easy as the road is rough, but I persistently went on. And from day one to my stage right now, I can proudly tell you, that I am ready for the NBA in the United States. In this quest, I only wish for Steph Curry to see me, the Steph Curry who plays for NBA side Golden State Warriors! He made me want to move on with my mission. He has a small body size but is still the most valuable player. So am I. He is the lion amongst sheep and so am I in my team Kakuma Bulls Basketball. I have played several camp and regional tournaments and I am the teenage wonder-kid nowadays. Thanks to Kakuma for making me have a home away from home! And to the world at large I’d like to say: Kakuma is the place to be for scouts and talent searchers. And if you need another Steph Curry for your team, you’ll find me here in Kakuma!
