Women’s soccer helps her to take revenge on her mother who left her at a very early age in the refugee camp
I am 16, playing in the women's football league in the refugee camp and aiming to play in the Women World Cup one day. I want to prove to my weak mother who left me in Kakuma when I was only 6 months old, that nothing is impossible with hard work, determination and above all with the help of God. My name is Awel Malueth, born in Kakuma. My parents and grandmother came from South Sudan to Kakuma in 1997 because of civil war. But my father went back to South Sudan leaving us behind. And my mother left me in the dark night when I was only 6 months old. It was later discovered that she had gone back to South Sudan. But I thank God for my grandmother. She is a caring, kind, courageous and loving mother to me. She took me as her responsibility. She taught me about life. She taught me about my culture. More important, she taught me how to be strong and face challenges. She is the only mother I know in Kakuma and I live by her principles. I know it is a hard life to be an old grandmother who does not do any other work and therefore merely depends on the little food she receives from UNHCR. I eat the same food every day. No balanced diet for us. I do not get enough clothes and other basic needs for girls. But I'm still happy because I value the advice from my grandmother that life will change one day. And I am the one to bring that change. I have successfully finished my primary school level this year and hoping to join secondary school next year. My daily activities in Kakuma include reading books, watching women football games, playing football, helping my grandmother in doing housework like cooking, washing utensils and cleaning the compound. I love Kakuma because of football. I like playing football because it brings people together. Currently I'm playing for Venus FC. We play in the Kakuma Camp Divas' League for girls. My dream is to become a professional footballer and I'm sure I will achieve my dream because I have a strong grandmother who always encourages me to work hard. And I have my coach who trains me everyday and advices me to focus on football. I want to change the life of my grandmother, my family, my community and my nation - through football. I want to play in the Women’s World Cup one day. I want my grandmother, my parents, friends, and others to watch me play on television one day. I want to prove to my weak mother who left me at the tender age, that nothing is impossible with hard work, determination, and above all with God.
