She escaped her forced marriage and is now turning bedsheets into pieces of art
I came to Kakuma to escape my forced marriage. I am now making a living out of embroidery. Kakuma is a free land that supports each and every creative work! I'm Amer Jurkuch Atem, 30 years old, married and mother of one beautiful daughter. I'm South Sudanese by nationality. I arrived in Kakuma on 16th June 2010 and later my brother and sister followed me to Kakuma and they are staying with me. I fled from my home country because I was forcefully removed from school by my father to marry an old man who paid my father money and cows. It was really hard for me to resist my father’s idea. But I thought about it critically and found it was a bad idea for me. I didn't like the old man. And I decided to move to Kakuma to have freedom of choice. Now I'm happy because I'm married to the right person - a man of my age who loves me and I love him too. I like Kakuma because there is freedom. Female are not ignored in decision making. Besides you meet with people across the world with different cultures. I have learned norms, virtues, and values from different people. Contrary, I dislike the environmental conditions in Kakuma. It is extremely hot and dry. Sometimes it's hard to get water and you have to struggle. Also I don't like the way other people think of me as a refugee. The title hurts me and I look forward to change this in the near future. However, I'm talented in embroidery and it is the work I do in Kakuma. I make beautiful flowers and other nice shapes using threads on the bedsheet. And I'm paid for my work. People come with their bedsheets. This is the artwork I like most and I am also doing it for living. I am determined to nurture this talent in the near future to become helpful not only to myself and my family but also to the entire society. My dream for Kakuma is to see young people engaged in creative works like embroidery, painting and other artwork and realise their talents and potentials to better their lives. Lastly, this is my message to the people of the world, Kakuma is a free land that supports each and every creative work!
