Football player
with God
I always wake up early in the morning, pray and attend football practice, for I believe there is nothing one can achieve without God. My name is Issac Garang commonly known as Zaki at the Football field. I am 22 years old, from South Sudan. Fourth born ina family of six. I came to Kakuma Refugee Camp with my mother and siblings in 2002, escaping the longest war back in our homeland, leaving behind my father who was by then forcefully recruited into the military by the Sudan People Libation Army SPLA. After reaching Kakuma we were received by UNHCR that provided us with a ration card and told us were to stay. What I like most about Kakuma are the free services such as education, food and sport activities . And the interaction with the many other nationalities living together in Kakuma like one community. But what I don't like in Kakuma is its harsh climate that involves dusts and temperatures that raise up-to 38 to 40 degrees Celsius which sometimes make learning difficult for the students at schools. Attacks from spiders, scorpions and snakes are common here, as well as diseases like cholera and malaria. My daily activity in Kakuma is playing football. Football has been part of my life, it's my talent and I have gained extra skills in football through daily practices and playing matches frequently. Footballmeans fans and it unites people. I like it more when I see a big number of people turning up to come and watch us play in the field during the time of the match. My favorite icon is the former Arsenal player Thierry Henry. I look up to him because I love his playing style and I know one day one time I will be like him or even better than him. I wake up early in the morning, pray and attend to my football practice for I believe there is nothing one can achieve without God. I want to be representing my country in international games and that's my dream. I like all the incouragements my friends and family give me and I am sure I will not let them down in any way for "where there is a will, there is always a way”. I prefer living in developed countries such as the United States or Europe, for if I was there I would have found myself in the biggest teams there. Maybe I can be lucky one time and get there, so that I can try help youth in Kakuma, nurture their talents and skills to be participating in the world activities also because Refugees are just normal people like you. I would love to tell anyone who has never visited Kakuma that Kakuma is a small paradise with many talents at any field. And people in Kakuma have proved to beon top of the world during the Rio Olympics competition held in Brazil in 2016 and we were glad to have some refugees from Kakuma represented there to run as well. Indeed, Kakuma has got the talents and I am very proud to be a citizen of Kakuma.
